Rosh HaShana, the Jewish New Year 5780

is Biblically Yom Teruah, Feast of Trumpets

Rosh Hashanah is September 30, 2019 and begins the High Holiday season for many Jewish people. Most of Judaism recognizes Rosh Hashanah as the beginning of the New Year. Even the traditional greeting “L’shanah tova,” means the wish, “to a good year.” This is not bad but it is not what the Bible says about this day.

The Bible refers to the day as “Yom Teruah” or “Day of the [trumpet] Blast.”  The Bible doesn’t give much direction on how to celebrate the day aside from the command that the day be celebrated with trumpet blasts and that it is a holy convocation (a Sabbath).

The trumpets referenced would have been the ram or antelope horn trumpets. These horns, when blown, give a memorable sound that was common during Biblical times but rarely heard in current times outside of Jewish communities. The trumpets were used to sound an attack during war time, they were sounded for alarm, for notification of an event’s beginning and ending, for proclamation of royal happenings, for the end of the sacrificial times of Passover and Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), and for the celebration of Yom Teruah.

These trumpets are still being used traditionally within Jewish communities for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I personally own four horns (shofarim) differing in sizes and shapes.

It is the tradition among Jewish people all over the world that on Rosh Hashanah they read the story of Avraham (Abraham) binding his son Yitz’chak (Isaac) for sacrifice. If you haven’t read it in a while I highly recommend reading it (Genesis 22). As a believer and follower of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, there is much that one can glean from the story because Isaac is a type or a pre-example of Jesus.

There is also a lore, told by some rabbis, regarding the story of Abraham and Isaac that I find very interesting. The story is that the ram, with its horns caught in the thicket, which had become the substitution for Isaac, was part of the original creation of animals (Genesis 1). That it was saved on the arc by Noah, and preserved and then ensnared by God for this very moment.  (Alive from the beginning of time for the purpose of being a sacrificial substitution for Isaac. An interesting idea, to say the least.) The legend goes to say that the horns of this ram were turned into Shofarim (trumpets) and were saved to be blasted at two specific times: 1. when God met the Israelites at Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:16, 17) and 2. the proclamation of the Day of The Lord (Joel 2:1). Since there is no Biblical or historical evidence of this, it is just an interesting story that can’t be proven one way or the other.

My personal belief is that not only did God place His plan within the Scriptures for people to read but He also placed His plan within the calendar for the nation of Israel to rehearse. The spring holidays - Passover (Pesach), Unleavened bread (Hag H’Matzot), First Fruits (Yom H’Bikkurim), and Pentecost (Shavuot) - point to the Messiah’s death and resurrection, while the fall holidays – Day of the Blast/Return of the King (Yom Teruah), Day of Atonement/Judgement Day (Yom Kippur), and Feast of Booths/God with us (Sukkot) - point to His second coming - His return and reign from Jerusalem.

Arni and Yonit Klein recently celebrated 50 years of marriage in the UK (Mazal tov!) plus they also update on their ministry helpers leaving Israel for visa requirement as more permanent status for them is sought (pray for the attorney representing them in the matter). Also worship leader Andrei is now coming under the Emmaus Way ministry (donations formerly sent to Morning Star will now be salaried through Emmaus). The goal is to raise 1500 Euros for him, whose "Gifted and anointed, his contribution to the daily worship times in our ten-day gatherings has been foundational and impacting."  Some other 'nuts and bolts' for the German donation system is changing 9/30. see online here

From Maoz Ministries Maoz Israel Partners with Moti to Feed Tel Aviv Plus in their Weekly Prayer Request letter, they are asking for continued prayers over the post-election formation of the Israeli government. As the Israeli favorite Hebrew word for such situations, it is still a real balagan! ("a disorderly, confusing, and/or overwhelming situation" or utter chaos). They ask prayers "for the government that is formed to allow for more freedom of faith for Messianic Jews." Also for prayers for Israel's salvation. The God-appointed biblical holidays are ALWAYS spiritual seed time and harvest for the Jewish people. They ask for continued prayer for the Maoz leadership - Ari, Shira, Kobi, and Shani - as well as all who serve Maoz ministries in Israel and in the nations

Also Maoz continues to request a priority prayer which I encourage all the subscribers to intercede for them and all involved: "For truth and righteousness to shine forth in everything related to the video slandering several Messianic leaders and ministries in Israel, which also mentions Maoz Israel by association. We want to continue stressing, that what this video presents is NOT the truth. We appreciate your prayers and we trust the Lord for justice to prevail."

Aleksey Raikhstadt, the new leader of the Beit Immanuel congregation in Jaffa, continues to share his family's journey which has led to being a congregational leader in Israel. This was a most touching testimony as Aleksey shared about their 13-year old son's bar mitzvah. Doctors wanted them to abort because of detecting the CMV virus is wife Allas' blood, but they chose to bring son Roni into the world anyway. I had tears in my eyes reading this testimony and seeing the pictures of his boy's delighted face at being lifted up by the men of the congregation  As Aleksey wrote, "With my eyes full of tears, I looked at my boy in a wheelchair and my heart screamed to God. How much I wanted to see my son to perform such an essential act for every Jewish boy. But ... unfortunately, my boy cannot walk or talk. What we know is that the he can accept love and give it back to others. When he hugs me, I forget all the difficulties and the words of John 9:3 again fill my heart, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him'."

Shlomy and Miriam Abramov of Awake Israel Ministries are in the US on speaking tour. I had to post the picture they put on Facebook because it is a great example of how believers can stand alongside their Israeli spiritual family to make a difference just by giving what you have to give. The photo shows a believer at his computer helping to build the Abramov's ministry website. Love that!

Please pray for Ruth in Nahariya| Olga Bikas’s health condition that seems to have become chronic, with no hope from the doctors for any improvement in the future. This, no doubt, puts an additional emotional and physical burden on our family. Please pray for her acute back pain. | Rania Sayegh asks for prayer of restoration of strength, energy, and complete healing. | Ronit Bender sends this update:  My cough is gone mostly, my heart valve  is still leaking but my lungs are fine. I totally have peace about my health, although it is far from great.  I still appreciate prayer, as I need it. My 2¢ and an FYI to Israeli Ministries and Israel-Related Ministries

From time to time in years past I have discovered that some Israeli ministries had been inexplicably blocked from receiving donations to their PayPal accounts. Sometimes the issue would go away, but sometimes the ministry just ceased to offer the PayPal option.

Most of you have likely heard of the de-platforming of certain groups from social media, or extreme censoring. This is not just banning conservative political figures and groups, it also touches those that are Israel-oriented or that inform about Islamist terrorism. This is due to the Leftist view prevalent at most internet tech companies, including the PayPal platform.

Days ago I heard another disturbing report about PayPal refusing to release the payments made to an Israeli ministry for an upcoming tour the ministry is conducting. Here is what Ron Cantor of Messiah's Mandate wrote on Facebook:

Hey friends, I really hate to do this. I have been dealing with this all day with PayPal. We need some help. PayPal will not release our funds for our Israel Tours! Please share this! It is not right that a company can just keep your money with no explanation and no offer to resolve the issue.

PayPal has thousands of dollars of funds for our Israel tours. We run a tour business & use #Paypal. For one week we‘ve been trying to transfer those funds to our bank account so we can pay airlines, hotels, etc for upcoming tours. Paypal won’t release our funds b/c of security.

They can just keep our money as long as they want? We have to pay our venders this week, but the agents I talked to simply said, “We’ll, we trust our security algorithms” meaning, we believe you are a bad dude. So a computer tells them what to do and they refuse to override.

I asked them, “At what point do you check with a human?” They said NEVER! I asked, “How long can you keep our money? A month, a year?” I was told that they will not release our funds until their computer algorithm is comfortable.

 

So, Paypal can keep our money, make interest on it, while we cannot pay our bills—with OUR MONEY! This must be illegal? They said try again in 48 hours (it doesn’t bother them that we have bills due tomorrow) and it “MIGHT WORK”!! But if not, try again later, and then later.

Now, I understand security, but at some point you need to get a human involved that can verify that we are who we say we are. Or maybe they think we are involved in something illegal...fine, then just check. Please! We do Israel tours. Maybe their computers are anti-Semitic?

Paypal...you need to release our funds that we I entrusted to you. Instead, you are using our funds to make more money for yourself. Really bad! Please share! — with @paypal.

CONSIDER THIS A HEAD'S UP. There are other options other than PayPal, but if you are not quite ready to search those out and switch, at least do this: Do not treat PayPal as a bank - a place to store your incoming funds until you are ready to use it. Protect yourself from this situation happening to you and transfer all funds to your bank as soon as it comes in to PayPal.

I use PayPal too, although not with the kind of incoming funds like are being withheld from Ron's tour account. Nevertheless, this will change how I use PayPal going forward to. Even though I suspect that it is the larger sums that attracts the attention of PayPal (like it is the larger influence of those de-platformed or strongly censored by many social media platforms), none of us can afford to have them tie up our funding.

Time to wake up to what is only going to increase. If you ever wondered how Revelation 13:17 might look, it might look like this. "And that no man might buy or sell..."  —Donna Diorio

The Elect & Election | Arrows from Zion 9/18/2019

Messianic Israel Makes Their Votes Count

Here are just a few of the voting photos that Israeli Ministry Leaders posted yesterday during the election. Even today, with all the votes tallied, no one is certain what will happen next due to the neck-to-neck outcome and the complexity of the governmental system in Israel. Will there be yet another (third!) election, or will some form of unity government be hashed out? No one knows, but all the Israeli ministries are saying the same: God is going to work it out as He sees fit for the season ahead. I think we can trust that, don't you?

Some of you may have a difficult time wrestling with the outcome of the Israel elections. I know a great many of the English-speaking Christian world love Benjamin Netanyahu for his strong stance for protecting Israel. If that were the only factor, then almost certainly the entire Israeli Messianic community would be with Netanyahu all the way, but that is really not what I have been hearing from the spiritual leaders in Israel for months. Instead, many expressed as late as voting day, not yet knowing how they were going to cast their vote. They also expressed that God's will was going to prevail for Israel in the final outcome. So, I am saying all this to reassure you that no matter how the vote turns out, no matter how the coalition government then forms, let's manage our feelings about what we thought should happen and trust God who is watching over Israel to perform HIS WILL.

There is almost no change from the last election that failed to produce a government. Likud has 31 seats and Blue and While has 32 seats. They still, most likely, need each other to form a government.

Of course, if those numbers stick, Blue and White will have the most votes and will be given an opportunity to form a government. So, yes, that is a big change.

Netanyahu did not get the mandate he had hoped to receive from the voters. This time he will be even with Blue and White or slightly behind. Voters were turned off after Bibi pledged before the last election to be against an prime minister immunity law, only to reverse himself after the elections (since he is under inditement and would prefer to be Prime Minister as opposed to Prime Dish Washer). The law would keep him out of jail as long as he was PM. And he was also seeking to weaken the Supreme Court's ability to overrule new laws as "unconstitutional", something that would put minorities at risk.

Another big change is that Avigdor Lieberman's "Israel Our House" party nearly doubled in size from five to nine seats. Lieberman's refusal to join Likud last spring is the only reason we had to have new elections. Voters rewarded him for his stand against the Ultra Orthodox, seeking to keep a new law from being passed that would send their children (LIKE MINE!!!) to the army. Lieberman now has far more influence over who will lead the nation, than his nine seats would normally warrant. If he will not serve with Bibi. Bibi cannot form a government, as he will have about 54 seats (and needs 61).

“The clearest winner on Tuesday, according to exit polls, was Mr. Liberman, the longtime Netanyahu ally turned nemesis who leads an ultra-nationalist secular party,” opines the New York Times. An Israeli journalist writes “Liberman isn’t just the winner of the elections, he’s the one who will determine the makeup of the next government.”

Lieberman stated this morning that he will only support a unity government. Good for him!

Possible Scenarios | Let’s assume that things stay as they are with 90% of the vote counted. That would mean, Blue and White wins with 32 seats and Likud in second with 31 seats. Now understand, wining in Israel doesn't mean winning until you actually form a government. Winning merely means you get the first crack at trying...and sometimes, as happened in 2009, the President can see that, despite winning, you cannot form a coalition, and he will reach out immediately to the second place winner.

If Blue and White edges out Likud, I suspect that President Ruvlin will give Beni Gantz the first try.

In order for Gantz to form a center-left government he will have to reach out to the Arab parties that form the “Joint List”. Understand that no Arab party has ever joined in a ruling coalition. This would be unprecedented.

However, Gantz may turn to Likud in hopes of forming a unity government. This would be best for the country. And they could do it quickly with just three parties: Blue and White 32, Likud 31 and Israel Our House 9 for 72 seats. But there are lots of egos involved and hurt feelings.

If Gantz fails on both fronts and Ruvlin will be forced to turn to an embattled Bibi. However, as noted, without Israel Our House he cannot form a right wing government. And, since Blue and White won, they will not serve in a likud-led unity government. There are reports saying that Netanyahu is softening on potential partners—meaning he is open to serving with Blue and White. However, my guess is that would be with the caveat that he is still prime minister.

Likud may finally oust Bibi for the sake of unity in the nation or he may retire (both unlikely!). It is hard to imagine a unity government with Bibi in the number two position. Many see him as a king. On the right they chant King Bibi because they love him. On the left and in the media they chant King Bibi to mock him. If is hard for many of us to imagine Israel without Netanyahu. If is hard to imagine that Gantz or anyone else will have the wherewithal to stand up to Iran. Bibi has been a generational figure on the world’s stage. He can get Trump as well as Putin on the phone at any moment. But, he is under inditement. And, he has served a very long time. 

Big Losers! | The obvious loser here is Netanyahu. The country did not rally behind him as he had hoped. The other huge loser is the Ultra Orthodox parties. They could very easily be left out of a new government. This has only happened twice before and it would be GREAT for the nation. They are surely panicking at this point. These parties demand millions from the government to be in a coalition. It is essentially a legal bribe. They do not support the army and want to live off charity. 

At the end of the day the only hope of forming a government is for both Likud and Blue and White to push aside their egos and serve the country. Ideologically, they are not far apart. It is all about pride, ego and selfishness. Gantz can rule for two years as Prime Minister and then allow Bibi to serve (if he is not in jail). If they can’t come to an agreement, they are risking putting the country through a third election. Please don’t!

Sally Shiff, the US Liaison for HaMaayan congregation in Kfar Saba, and one of their intercessors, wrote on voting day in Israel about some of the issues that are guiding the votes of Messianics, and seculars, "For instance, the Shas party, an extremely religious party will agree to the coalition if their members do not have to conscript into the army, and all their children have dental insurance.  In addition to these demands, they are currently in charge of who enters and can become a citizen of Israel.  They are against Messianic Believers, and establish rules not allowing believers in Jesus to become a citizen."

That is why, Sally tells us, many Messianic ministries have been asking for prayers to be made for the formation of a government that honors God - clearly any government that suppresses the Gospel in Israel does not honor the Father! Sally wrote further that "People are very undecided of who is the best choice for Israel. There is no clear direction of which is good or bad. Except God is in charge. What God showed me yesterday is the people are in the valley of decision.

"I re-read the scripture pertaining to that (Joel 3:14-18) and saw what is also happening in Israel: there is a growing number of people who are in the valley of decision regarding Jesus! Almost daily we are hearing within our small circles of our members sharing the gospel with people who are inquiring about God and His Son, Jesus. With the month of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur upon us, people again are searching their souls.  Please pray with me for THIS valley of decision!"

She adds: " I am in process of developing a conference IN THE UNITED STATES next May for intercessors teaching HOW TO PRAY FOR ISRAEL. If this sparks your interest, write me and let me know that you are interested. The place and date are still to be determined, and I am looking for those who truly feel they have a call to pray for Israel and want to learn how."

Speaking of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, Daniel Juster addresses the issue of Christians keeping the Holy Days in Should Gentiles Keep The Feasts of Israel?  "They were God’s appointed Feasts for Israel. They are still central to Jewish tradition and Jewish identity and have been celebrated continuously even with the destruction of the Temple and the scattering of the Jewish nation in the first and second centuries. They are all national holidays in Israel." BUT are they for Christians? "We reject the false teaching that Gentile should keep the specific sabbaths of the Feasts on the right days. However, the conclusion that the Biblical Feasts are irrelevant is foolish and incoherent." There is a big difference in teaching about the Feasts so Christians can more fully appreciate " the reality that the Church is an international people joined to Israel" than demanding Christians also keep the Feasts. Great wisdom in this short article that should set many on the path of great benefits and blessing.

Carolyn Hyde wrote "It’s well known that the majority of people in Messianic congregations in America are Gentile, but over the years I’ve witnessed several movements such as Hebrew Roots, Two House and others that have led many people astray.  ...So I must admit I came to a place of mockery of some of these congregations and it’s been a rotten attitude of mine for several years – until last night." We have a couple of weekly prayer letters from the Sorko-Ram/Ferguson's Maoz ministries, the latest about the elections, Katy Smith writes: "The saddest part of elections season is, of course, the fact that it brings to the surface every rift possible in our society - left vs. right, Jew vs. Arab, secular vs. Orthodox, etc., etc. Yet, amazingly, with all these disagreements and differences, our nation has the ability to come together in times when it's needed the most. And that's one of the most beautiful things in this Land."

Among the prayer requests: Pray for "a time of true repentance. We are in the middle of the month of Elul - traditionally the month of repentance that ushers in the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement. Pray that those who seek the Lord will find Him, and accept His Son, Yeshua. Pray for all Israel to be saved." 

Also "For the body of believers in Israel. A couple of months ago, a long video was published, full of [false] accusations against several well-known Messianic leaders and ministries in the land." Daniel and Shirya Yahav of the Tiberias Peniel Fellowship have re-located their messianic school to to a couple of storage rooms in their kindergarten building. After losing their 20-yr school location, it was the best, most cost-effective approach and also made it possible to get the school operational by the opening of the school year. They consider their investment in operating a school a must due to " a more peaceful atmosphere, teaching Biblical views, instead of going to the public school where they often suffer harassment and are taught unbiblical views." Please pray for all the students & teachers and " for the doors to be opened for us as to the future expansion of the school."

The youth & kid's camp were a great success with one major healing of a boy with a virus skin condition doctors had tried to treat for 2 years. The 11-yr old came for prayer with his parents and a day later the condition was almost gone, then completely gone within several weeks. Thank God - and may his healing testimony 'go viral' increasing faith in all who have been aware of his condition.

The Yahav's ask for prayers for the right coalition to be formed following the election, also pray for Israel's protection as the enemies threatening their border are building tensions. I totally have peace about my health, although it is far from great.  I still appreciate prayer, as I need it. I am very grateful they let me travel in October and November both to Australia and Holland. Please continue to pray for Ronit | Shlomy Abramov of Awake Israel, because of a condition where blood does not flow to his legs as it should, was advised by a specialist in case of injuries, he could lose his leg because of the blood flow issues. Shlomy has to wrap his legs daily because of the blood flow issues. Please pray for Shlomy | Ruth Nessim has recovered from a strong 2-month bout with Sciatica, but her most critical prayer need which she says may required an operation. Please pray for Ruth in Nahariya| Olga Bikas’s health condition that seems to have become chronic, with no hope from the doctors for any improvement in the future. This, no doubt, puts an additional emotional and physical burden on our family. Please pray for her acute back pain. | Rania Sayegh asks for prayer of restoration of strength, energy, and complete healing.
